The Burden of Time // Track 4

Phantom

Lyrics

Another crowded room, a sea of smiling lies,
I wear a paper-thin disguise.
Their laughter rings like glass against the stone
That’s settled deep inside, where I’m alone.

There’s a phantom in my space,
A silence I can’t place.
Surrounded by the sound, but hollow in the chase,
I’m disappearing without a trace.

You asked me how I am, I said ‘I’m doing fine’,
And traced the patterns of a cheap red wine.
Reflected in the glass, a face I barely know,
Just waiting for the quiet undertow.

There’s a phantom in my space,
A silence I can’t place.
Surrounded by the sound, but hollow in the chase,
I’m disappearing without a trace.

Is anybody real?
Or just a ghost I feel?
Maybe the loneliest place… is here.

Still a phantom in my space,
A silence I can’t place!
Swallowed by the sound, and lost inside the chase,
I’m disappearing… without a trace.

Meaning

"This song captures the kind of loneliness that does not depend on being alone. You can be surrounded by people, conversations, noise, and still feel completely separate from all of it. Nothing lands. Nothing connects. It feels like you are moving through it without actually being part of it. There is a distance that sits between you and everyone else. People talk, laugh, ask questions, but none of it reaches you in a real way. You answer, you react, you stay present on the surface, but inside there is a gap that does not close. It feels like no one truly understands you, even when they are right in front of you. That feeling starts to turn inward. You see yourself from the outside, like a version of you that just keeps going through the same motions. The loneliness becomes heavier because it exists in the middle of everything, not outside of it. It stays with you, even when the room is full."
